Bask in the afternoon warmth of the renowned Salon de Ville and breathe in the magic of its Red Velvet Afternoon Tea, served with finesse and style. Surrounded by soothing sounds of the harp, indulge in exquisite finger sandwiches, pastries and savouries, as well as good old favourites like plain and raisin scones, laid out on a traditional three-tiered tea stand.
Salon de Ville’s Multitude of Opulent Occasions Formerly a news room in 1910, where the Shanghai Club members read their papers, caught up over the latest news and smoked a pipe, Salon de Ville is now one of the more effete spaces of the Waldorf Astoria Club.
From photographic evidence, the original Salon was a rather austere reading room. Its re-imagining is far fuller, creating a sense of story for the modern guests. The original coffered ceiling and ornate crown mouldings feature dentils wrapped in gold leaf. Period crystal chandeliers were commissioned for the new space, adding elaborately framed and gilded mirrors as well as Oriental silk rugs to complement the lavish sensations.
And true to its newfound name, guests can comfortably relax with equally famous views of the city, with Pudong and the Bund at your feet.
