Gaining entry to the world’s longest bar back in 1910 wasn’t enough for a social triumph for some. The Shanghai Club’s extravagant 111-foot Long Bar, in glorious raw mahogany, was a barometer of the social status of its patrons. Those who were seated at the bar’s east end, facing the panorama of the Huangpu, were the sparkling social elite, while newcomers were relegated to the other end.
Over 100 years later, those markers of social distinction have vanished, but the nostalgic glamour of the Long Bar remains after painstaking architectural restoration as part of the Waldorf-Astoria Shanghai on the Bund. The marble columns, stained glass windows and detailed wall panelling are among the elements of the original bar which have been impeccably reproduced from archival photographic records.
Patrons with discerning palates and a taste for luxury will be presented with an extensive range of spirits and a diverting selection of cocktails, including Waldorf Astoria classics done the original way. These exceptional spirits can be best savoured with the Long Bar’s selection of premium Cuban cigars.
A choice menu of tempting morsels accompanies the liquid offerings. The Oyster Bar features a wide range of fresh beach-farmed oysters air-flown directly from France at least twice a week. Other gastronomic bites include the famous Waldorf Salad, done with a Shanghainese twist in the form of a generous crab meat topping, succulent Wagyu beef sandwiches and platters of inspired finger food for a speedy luncheon or for sharing on a memorable night out.
